Teacher of the Week – Steve Young

This week, Steve Young has agreed to be our teacher of the week. Mr. Young went to Wayne High School in New York. His first job was building decks for a summer. From there, he went to Alfred State College, where he played both football and wrestled. He was then recruited to wrestle for the University of Southern Maine. He earned an associated degree in Social Sciences. Out of college, he became the wrestling coach at the middle school. He moved up to the KHS wrestling team recently. This year is his first year as head coach. He said that the previous head coach, Josh Stone, “prepared me by teaching me the behind-the-scenes stuff a coach should know. I am sad to see him go.” Young is also an Ed Tech at KHS. He works one-on-one with Zac Jewett, and said “I help him with homework, notes, and getting to class.” If Mr. Young could change anything about the school, he said that he would love there to be more facilities (like gyms). One thing he likes is how things have changed since he was in school. He said, “I love the way kids get along here. There is no major feuding like there was when I went to high school. Everyone gets along, and it makes my job a whole lot easier. It is a lot more enjoyable to work with nice people.” Being both a coach and teacher at KHS, Young states, “Teaching in class is not much different than teaching kids on the mat.” It has helped him create a better bond with the kids. Some fun facts about Mr. Young are that he recently got a Black Lab, German Shepard mix puppy, named Hunter. His favorite food is wings, no matter the flavor. “As long as there’s blue cheese, I’m good to go!” says Young. If you’d like to be next week’s teacher of the week, email us at [email protected]!
