Fall Sports Update

Fall+Sports+Update

As October rolls around,  September is coming to an end and fall sports are reaching their mid point of the season. At Kennebunk High School, we offer a variety of sports, including Field Hockey, Girls’ and Boys’ Soccer, Cross Country, Golf, Volleyball, Football, and Cheering.

Field Hockey

The girls’ field hockey is back from an impressive season last year, and ready to do just as well or even better this time. When asking Senior Quinn Normandeau how she thought the season was going, she said, “I think it’s going very well, I think we have a very strong team and we’re very bonded and we work well together.” Last year, the girls had a tough lost in the semi-finals. Normandeau said, “One of our team goals is to remain bonded and really close throughout the season, so we can play as one and play well together.” The next home game is September 24th against Fryeburg Academy at 4:00pm.

Girls and Boys Soccer

One of the many sports offered is girls’ soccer. With a new coach, Shannon Cavanaugh, a new goalie in net, and a large amount of graduates gone, this year’s team is still going strong with a current undefeated season. If you’d like to see the girls next home game, it will be held September 29th against York High School at 6:00pm.

The other soccer team offered is boys’ soccer. Senior Brenden Whitten said, “The season is going well, we’re 4-2-1. We have a lot of freshmen but they are growing up fast, and we’ve been competing well against top teams, thanks to our midfielders and backs. We have a real tough test coming up against Yarmouth.” Whitten said, “The team goal for the season is to a deep run into the playoffs and win playoff games.” If you’d like to see them play, I’d recommend going to the boys’ next home game is September 27th against Cape Elizabeth at 6:00pm.

Cross Country

If you enjoying running, are looking to exercise, or just would like to be a part of a team sport, then cross country is a good sport for you. Senior Chloe Smith, one of the 5 members of the girls’ varsity team, said, “The season is going really well. We have a lot of new runners who have been helping us do well against tough teams. We have had three meets and come in second each time, beating about 8 teams total.” Smith also said, “Our team goal this season is to make states (the girls’ team). The team made states last year, but we believe we have a better shot this year making it and doing well.”

Volleyball

Volleyball has won two of their matches this year and has a Varsity, JV, and a first team. Junior Rachel Petrarca said, “The season’s going well and it’s a large improvement from last year; we have a lot of new varsity players, two sophomores, and a couple of new juniors. We lost a lot of seniors from last year.” The team wishes to “Continue to improve our mental game, communication and attitude on and off the court. Also work on strong hits and plays,” said Petrarca. The next home match will be September 27th against Thornton Academy at 6:00pm.

Football & Cheerleading

Football, also known as the sport with the biggest fan section, is currently holding an undefeated record with a 3-0 record. Junior Cole Hoffman said, “The season is going really well and we’re off to a good start. We’ve had a lot of kids step up and we have had a really strong team, as we’ve improved over the last year. I think it’ll be a good season and we’ll make a deep run into the playoffs.” The next game is their homecoming game, Saturday September 24th at 3pm, held at Kennebunk High School. The team’s “main goal is to win the gold ball,” said Hoffman. “I think we have a good chance of achieving this, as our team is very strong team overall and we don’t have a major weak spot on our roster. I’d also like to see us continue to stay close to each other”, he said. Fortunately, the boys do not only have a rocking fan section, but also the Cheerleading squad.

Cheering is another sport here at KHS that is not only a fall sport, but continues through the winter. The team is smaller this year, but still as strong as before. If you’d like to see them, then make sure you keep up with the football schedule.

Golf

Lastly, but certainly not least, another sport offered is golf. The golf team this year is very strong, like Sophomore Walker Robinson said, “We are off to a very good start, we just became 7-0 and everyone is having a good time.” The team goal is to “stay undefeated”, Robinson said. The next match will be held at Noble, September 27th at 3:30pm.
