Bold is the only word that fittingly describes the Yves Saint Laurent Spring 2018 ready-to-wear show. Set in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, the runway was sleek and simple. The clothes were chic and unique, as is typical with YSL shows.

The show opened with Maria Miguel clad in a sheer champagne toned shirt under a blue blazer accented with gold. This was paired with a pair of army green shorts and simple black pumps. This look, playful and chic, set the tone for the show. The early looks were a curious crossbreed between Parisien bohemian and Parisian glamour which contrasted the typical smoky French aesthetic of Paris fashion week.

As the show progressed the looks slowly began to fall back in line with tradition, and black slowly became the principale color of the night. Black leather boots, black pumps, black leather skirts. Metallics and sparkles lightened the mood of the show and gave the otherwise cool and brooding looks a fun twist.

The men’s looks were simple but always embellished with playful detail: a simple black bomber jacket, embroidered with vibrant butterflies or a plain white shoe encrusted with silver gems. Black was the base for all of the menswear looks, but color could be found in each. The shoulders of a leather jacket were overlaid with patches of colorful suede and studded with metal.

The most iconic pieces were not the clothes, but rather the feathered and jewel-encrusted boots that made their way down the runway.  The YSL rhinestone studded boots are perhaps the most iconic article from the show, and perhaps one of the most iconic pieces of the season.

The Yves Saint Laurent show was a French dream. Tradition met bohemian and produced a stylish hybrid which was built for fun-loving youth. YSL was one of the highlights of a rather demure Spring 2018 ready-to-wear season.
