Teacher Spotlight: Ms. Moy

This week’s Teacher Spotlight is Ms. Moy, who teaches AP History, AP Government and a few CP history classes. Ms. Moy started her teaching career almost eighteen years ago at Kennebunk High.  Though her favorite subject in school was history, she did not decide to become a teacher due to the inspiration of one of her own high school teachers, but rather because she “loved being on a stage” and wanted to teach history and make a difference.  As a teacher, she strives to “make room for people outside of the box,” something rare yet admirable for a high school teacher.

Many of her students are aware of her distaste for Canada, our northern neighbor, and Moy had this to say when questioned: “you’d have to tell me why I should like Canada.”  She mentioned that once, she had been stuck in a Canadian bus station for eighteen hours waiting for transportation back to the United States.

As a United States History teacher, it’s important to learna about Ms. Moy’s favorite presidents. Although Ms. Moy objects at the word “favorite,” the president which she currently finds the most interesting is Eisenhower, who served during the Cold War, although the historical figure that she has the “most respect for” is James Madison, a founding father and avid supporter of the Bill of Rights.

As a high schooler at York, Ms. Moy was on the cheerleading team.  Though she was on the team during high school, it wasn’t her top choice activity.  She only decided to participate because her mother wouldn’t let her play on the softball team.  If you’ve had Ms. Moy in a class, you might have noticed the tattoo scribbled onto her wrist.  It turns out that it’s a lightening bolt, representing her energy, which she got when she was 22.

Ms. Moy has always loved cars, with her favorite toy being a model car, a red ’64 Mustang.  Although there were almost no female mechanics at the time, she was able to get work at a Vokswagen shop in Las Vegas.  Since she liked problem solving, Ms. Moy loved working there. After some time, she decided to start teaching, bringing her to Kennebunk High School.

For Ms. Moy, being a teacher is best because she is able to have “meaningful conversations” and has met many great people. In closing, Ms. Moy would just like to say “thanks” to Kennebunk and the people that learn and work here.
