Poise, class, humor, and talent; these are just some of the words that describe the one and only Señor Andrew Lucas. Earlier this week, Señor made time in his busy schedule between juggling youthful minds, and making a mean seafood dish to let me interview him.

He began his journey at KHS in January of 2003 as he wanted to share his international experiences of traveling abroad “with young people so they could hopefully experience something similar.” He also elaborated on the most rewarding part of being a teacher of the young adults that will soon inhabit the “real world” as “real people” – seniors will hopefully get that – and that is having me (Dana Foley) as a student, and I couldn’t agree more. When he isn’t changing the lives of KHS, you might see Señor Lucas going for a brisk hike, or preparing an intricate South American dish – just kidding – but he says two of his most life changing experiences are the birth of his children and his first job as a short order cook, where he had to learn how to be a part of a fast-working, efficient team in order to provide quality.

In a more philosophical outlook, he says that the true meaning of life is an ancient Chinese secret; when asked what that secret was, he responded with “Beefy” – my lazy-eyed bulldog who knows how to hug on command.

His favorite philosopher is Huanchu Daoren, quoted saying “Don’t worry about what offends you; don’t take a liking to what pleases you.” Inspirational. If you know Señor, you know he’s famous for his ever-ominous canteen; when asked what urged him to start using his canteen, he said, “It is a vessel, DFoley.” He mentioned that he doesn’t wake up in the morning excited to bring his canteen to school, rather “it’s as arbitrary as the 4.3 billion water bottles in the Pacific Ocean.” To finalize our interview, he said his favorite quote is “What’s your favorite quote?” by Dana Foley, and his outlook on life is “Cloudy with a chance of meatballs.”

If you have a free minute and want rethink the world as you know it, stop by the portables and say hola to Señor Lucas.
