This is Halloween

Tips for Halloween 2016

Halloween is here! While it is on a Monday night, there are still plenty of ways to celebrate.  Here’s the top five things you can do to have a successful Halloween:

  1. Get a Great Costume:
    • What is Halloween without a killer costume? There are plenty of ideas out there, depending on what you kind of look you are going for. Anything political will be very popular this year, but if you want to avoid debating with people, there are plenty of other pop culture Halloween costumes. Characters from Suicide Squad also seem very popular this year. If you want something more classic, you can always put your take on the timeless witch, ghost, or vampire. If you’re creative and looking for a DIY costume, check out Madison Harakles’ DIY costume ideas here: https://theherdkhs.net/spotlights/2016/10/16/boo-it-yourself-frightening-fashion-for-this-halloween/. Dress up as anything but a clown!
  2. Avoid the Clowns
    • Speaking of clowns, make sure to be aware of their presence on Halloween. With the nationwide concern about clowns with malicious intent, be on your guard if you see one. It certainly will be a popular costume because of the threats that have occurred over the fall, but it can be unclear what each clown’s intentions are. When I asked a student, Kayla Gralia, how she felt about clowns being out on Halloween she said, ¨I’m absolutely terrified. The reason I’m going trick or treating with my brother on Halloween night is to make sure he doesn’t get killed by clowns. They don’t have to hide anymore on Halloween, because everyone is going to be wearing a mask. And you won’t know if one’s good or not.¨ It’s important to keep these points in mind, for your safety. But regardless, don’t let clowns ruin your Halloween. If you plan to go out, going with a group in a public area is probably the best way to stay safe.
  3. Check out Summer Street
    • Summer Street is one of the best place to go on Halloween, whether or not you are trick-or-treating. Summer Street has the best decorated houses in town, each creating its own individual style. The houses are also known to hand out the best kinds of candy and the biggest candy bars. Plus, the road is shut down by police officers, and there’s plenty of people around so the safety factor is a positive addition. Summer Street is a great, quick stop on Halloween. If you have nothing to do Halloween night, I highly recommend you check it out.
  4. Throw a Party
    • If trick-or-treating is not your thing, throwing a Halloween party is a great alternative. Halloween is on a Monday night this year, but throwing a party at some point this weekend would be ideal. It doesn’t have to be a big event, a low-key get together is a great option. Carving pumpkins, blasting Halloween music, costume contests, or just watching some festive movies all are ideas to include in your party.
  5. Halloween Movies
    • Last, but certainly not least, is Halloween movies. No matter what you decide to do this Halloween, you can never go wrong with one of the classic films that celebrate the holiday. Fun movies include Hocus Pocus, The Corpse Bride, Twitches, and Halloweentown. If you are looking for something more scary, Scream, Insidious, The Conjuring, or Halloween are all great options.
