Humans of KHS Mission: Giving a glimpse into the lives of students, alongside a portrait, the column shares quotes and stories from random students at Kennebunk High School.

“I went to this really nerdy theatre camp for a week, my parents didn’t tell me I was gonna go, and it was two nights before I had to leave that they told me. It was like 8th grade. I got there and I didn’t know anybody, I had no friends there. I was rooming with this girl; I was thirteen, she was 16, she had done everything. She had dropped acid, done all these drugs, stolen; she was like this rebel child in the camp. They had to keep a special eye on her and I was scared for my life because of this girl. She had eyeliner all over her eye, she just looked so intense like she would kill me. I was so scared. The first night she stayed up all night reading 50 Shades of Grey and cackling to herself. But, she was reading it out loud, I was so scared of her. She used to steal my clothes out of my suitcase and wear them. One time, I was trying to make conversation with her in front of everyone, because everyone was scared of her, so I told her I liked her shirt, and she was like, ‘Oh yeah, it’s yours’.

One of the last nights of camp, we both ended up not being able to sleep and so we drank Tab soda and just started talking. We talked about everything. I found out she was so rebellious because her best friend had drowned in a swimming accident a week before. It just showed me that even if you think you know someone, there’s always a side of them you’ve never seen. And sometimes the strangest people are the the most interesting. She gave me the best piece of advice I’ve ever been given. I’d never told anybody that I was really self-conscious, but I mean who isn’t in middle school? She was like, ‘Honestly, the secret to life is to just walk like you’re hot shit’, and I’ll never forget that.”

“When I think about Humans of New York (Instagram), it makes me realize that I have so much opportunity in the life I was born into, so there’s no excuse for me to not take advantage of that. It’s also pretty inspiring that everyone has little crises that they’re going through, but they all manage to be another face on the street.”

Funniest moment: “Adults are always like, ‘You kids just watch Netflix all the time, on your Twitter, blah blah blah.’ Well what other outlet do we have? Do I just stare at a wall?“
