The Answers to Your Grading System Questions

At the end of each quarter many people often ask, how are grades weighted? What’s on my report card? What do my colleges see on my transcript? These questions are always answered , yet we always forget. However, there is a slight change, this year to what colleges see on our transcripts.

In the KHS Student handbook, you can find tons of details, including GPAs, quarterly grading, the grading scale, and information about graduating with honors.  The KHS grading scale is as follows:

A+ 98-100 B+ 90-92 C+ 82-84 D+ 75-76 F 0-69
A 95-97 B 87-89 C 79-81 D 72-74
A- 93-94 B- 85-86 C- 77-78 D- 70-71

The KHS GPA is on a 100 point scale. Your college courses, honors, IB + AP classes are weighted more heavily. To weight your honors classes, take your current grade, multiply it by 0.8 ,and add 22! For IB HL, AP, and college courses, take the class grade, multiply it by 0.8, and add 24 (Note: IB SL add 22)! It’s very simple, but many new students don’t know how. (That means you Freshman should be reading the Rampage!)

To check your quarterly/yearly grades, you can go on the Powerschool Parent Portal. If you do not know your password or username, ask Mrs. Wiewel or Mrs. Nadeau-Slattery in the guidance office. If you do not have a computer to access, they will be more than happy to print out a hard copy of your grades.

If you graduate with honors, you get to wear a stole over your gown. Students who graduate with a 7 semester GPA of at least 93 get to wear the gold stole, while students who graduate with a 7 semester GPA of at least a 90 get to wear the Blue or White stole, depending on your gender.

This year when sending college transcripts, colleges will now see each classes’ weighted grade number. Before, colleges would see the same unweighted grades that we see on Powerschool/report cards and only the weighted GPA. I asked our principal, Mrs. Cressey, why she thought we should change this. Her response was, “We want to portray students in the best possible way”. This is what I think all students here at KHS want.

Junior Adrienne Dumas gave her thoughts about the KHS grading scale and weighted grades on transcripts. She thinks that we should have a 10 point grading scale. She feels that the grading scale we have now is a little confusing. She states, “I don’t mind it- it’s okay, but I think it could be better and easier to understand using a 10 point grading system”. She also agrees that our college transcript grades will look even better now.

Hopefully this information answers your commonly asked questions about the KHS Grading System!
