Wreaths Across America Visits Kennebunk High School
The holidays are times for people to come together, to begin and continue family traditions, and to appreciate those who have given their lives so we can live ours in peace. While they often stay within a family, traditions occasionally reach out to others from all different walks of life. One tradition, as it clearly states in the name, has extended its values to individuals all across the country. Wreaths Across America, like many traditions, started with an act of kindness and went unnoticed for many years. In 1992 the Worcester Wreath Company of Harrington, Maine found themselves with a surplus of wreaths as the end of the holiday season approached. Merrill Worcester, the company’s owner, made arrangements with Maine Senator Olympia Snowe for the wreaths to be placed at Arlington National Cemetery. Thus began an annual tribute which continued quietly for many years, until a picture of the wreath adorned stones circulated on the internet. Suddenly the project received national attention and has continued to grow from there. The pilgrimage from Harrington, Maine to Arlington is now known as the world’s largest veterans’ parade. The convoy routinely stops along the way at monuments, veterans’ homes, various communities, and schools. Yesterday it was KHS’s turn to welcome Wreaths Across America. In spite of the fact that there was no school, several community members and students turned out to welcome and thank the Wreaths Across America participants. Students from Kennebunk Elementary School presented the group with wreaths which they had made and also with thank you cards for the veterans on the convoy. Once again, no matter what their differences may be, individuals throughout the community are brought together for one common purpose this holiday season.
