Behind The Scenes: Spirit Week
Take a look into all of the preparation that goes into making this week so successful.
Last Friday, the one week that has always given a little more life to this dull month of March came to a close here at KHS. Spirit week is the perfect way to break up this seemingly endless month. Not only does it encourage students to come together and embrace looking a little silly, but it also gives them a chance to blow off some steam during after school activities. The most important part of spirit week, however, is one that is oftentimes overlooked and potentially underappreciated.
Each day during spirit week is assigned a theme that is determined by members of student council. Eliza Johnson, president of student council, said that “We have a meeting and brainstorm a huge list and then go on to vote on each day, the ones that are the most popular get turned into the four ones we pick.” While a majority of students find themselves excited about the theme of each day, not all are satisfied with the final picks. For anyone who happens to fall into this category, Johnson recommended those interested should join student council next year to be a part of the process.
There is no doubt that planning an event that hundreds of people are going to take part in can be a daunting task. Making sure that everything runs smoothly can only add to the stress of organizing. Mr. Viola, who is the advisor to student council said that the most difficult thing about organizing and planning spirit week “is just making sure that there are enough supervisors at each event and that the information is passed on from the student council to the advisors and to the students.” Johnson agreed, mentioning “Making sure each day has the right supplies and teacher refs/chaperones can be pretty tricky. I ran to Cummings right before the great race and bought two 4-packs of toilet paper.” No matter what problems may arise throughout the week, members of student council work hard to make sure everything runs smoothly.
Spirit week has always been a special one here at KHS. It’s important to students for many reasons, one of which Johnson mentioned being “It gives everyone a competitive edge and can take the pressure off of the slumps of March. A lot of Seniors are worried about college and exams, and for a week I think everyone got to participate in something really fun.”
