The US Open took place from August 19-September 9, in New York. Tennis player Yulia Putintseva is stirring up controversy after a video of her being rude to one of the ball girls went viral online. The role of ball boys/girls in tennis, in short terms, is to retrieve balls out of the court and pass them back to tennis players before the match begins and in between sets. Putintseva had just faced a third round loss to Jasmine Paolini when the ball girl attempted to throw her tennis balls. Putinsteva is seen in the video standing still, making no effort to catch the tennis balls and giving the ball girl a blank stare. Fans in the crowd booed her disrespectful actions, which prompted her to take to instagram to publicly apologize for her actions. She rationalized her actions by saying she was “really pissed off by not winning the game.”
