Mr. LaFlamme, who many may know as a substitute teacher, has recently joined the KHS staff as a hall monitor and is looking forward to ensuring the safety of both students and staff. He is originally from Sanford, where he went to high school, and he has lived in Maine his whole life. Though he may not have moved very much, he has traveled to Europe five times and hopes to one day go to France, where he is fluent in the language.
Before entering the KHS community, Mr. LaFlamme was a social worker at the Department of Health and Human Services, where he worked out of the Sanford office for twenty years. Soon after he retired, he was offered a position to teach French at Wells High School. Even though he didn’t have much experience teaching, he enjoyed his new role and later continued working in a school setting as a substitute teacher at Kennebunk. Outside of school, he enjoys golfing and listening to music with his family.
Mr. LaFlamme’s position was added partly because of the staff shortages facing KHS. As there is now only one assistant principal, it was difficult to balance monitoring the halls with the administrative responsibilities, so in order to alleviate some of that pressure, they added a hall monitor to the staff. This also helps teachers, as they no longer need to take time off during academic studies to make sure everyone is where they need to be. It may also be noted that the position was added soon after a recent incident, allowing administration to ensure enforcement of the rules.
So far, Mr. LaFlamme has found the transition smooth and has felt welcomed by everyone. He wants to continue getting to know the students, so if you see him walking around with his binder, he would love it if you introduce yourself. Welcome, Mr. LaFlamme!
