According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 9,000 adults are diagnosed with cancer in Maine each year, and more than 3,000 die from cancer each year. The Maine Cancer Foundation is a local nonprofit organization that helps to reduce this mortality rate by funding research and supporting patients through their recovery. Since 2008, the Maine Cancer Foundation has organized the annual Tri for a Cure, an all-female sprint triathlon that raises money for these projects. Over the years, the Tri for a Cure has raised over 24 million dollars.
I began my triathlon journey after I had shoulder surgery in February 2024, 6 months later I raced my first sprint triathlon, but I wanted to have a greater impact on the community. Cancer has touched many of my family members, including my grandmother who is a breast cancer survivor. When she was diagnosed at 52 years old she was frightened. More than 20 years ago, there were fewer survivors. Had she not survived, she would not have met any of her grandchildren. The Maine Cancer Foundation has helped her and thousands of others recover from this disease. She inspired me to make a difference by helping to raise money for the Maine Cancer Foundation in the Tri for a Cure. I am honored to be able to compete in the 2025 Tri for a Cure on July 20th, 2025.
