Movie Review: Doctor Strange

Doctor Strange, the latest addition to the Marvel cinematic universe is definitely one that you won’t want to miss. Viewers are immediately introduced to Stephen Strange, played by the notable British actor, Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game, Sherlock). Strange is an arrogant neurosurgeon who slowly learns what it means to be selfless and humble over the course of the film.

This film sets itself apart from other Marvel movies in a couple of different ways, the biggest being that it relies almost entirely on computer-generated imagery, or CGI. Since the film is based on sorcery, most scenes have an element of CGI. Whether it be because of scenery or an intense fight between two sorcerers, seamless CGI weaves it’s way into the majority of this film. However, the integration is done well, and doesn’t leave the audience dissatisfied. Doctor Strange also sets itself apart from the other Marvel movies because of the fact that the main characters are sorcerers, and Doctor Strange is the first superhero to be able to use magic. Up until now, the superheroes in this cinematic universe have never used magic, even if their powers may have been given to them. Prime examples of this are Captain America, who was given a serum, and Thor, whose powers lie within his hammer, Mjölnir.

Doctor Strange has been far from unsuccessful, with a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an 8 out of 10 on the International Movie Database. On it’s debut weekend, it topped the charts for ticket sales, bringing in 85 million dollars. This was expected due to the fact that it’s a Marvel movie, but it’s still no small feat (or amount of money).
