The 2017 Academy Awards wowed everyone from the outfits to the mishap regarding the announcement of Best Picture. This year was the 89th anniversary of the Oscars and was hosted by Jimmy Kimmel who, as always, put on a great show. Some of the performances included Justin Timberlake, John Legend, Sting and more. As far as awards go, these were some of the standouts:

  • Best Picture: Moonlight
  • Best Actress in a Leading Role: Emma Stone, La La Land
  • Best Actor in a Leading Role: Casey Affleck, Manchester by the Sea
  • Best Animated Film: Zootopia
  • Best Documentary: O.J.: Made in America

Best Picture was saved best for last. Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway and Jordan Horowitz, the producer of Moonlight announced the winner this year. A sudden turn of events occurred when Warren Beatty pulled a Steve Harvey at the Miss Universe Pageant. Accidentally, he opened the envelope for Best Actress that read ¨Emma Stone, La La Land.¨ Of course, the cast came to the stage and gave their thanks. Senior Eliza Johnson watched the show and states, ¨I was really surprised when this happened, I really loved the movie La La Land.¨ It was not until afterwards that Horowitz, ironically, caught the mistake that the wrong envelope was opened. The cast handled it very well and handed over the Oscar to the cast of Moonlight. Although this is a disappointing moment for anyone that hoped for La La Land to win the award, it is not the first time it has happened. A similar mistake was made in 1964 when Sammy Davis Jr. also opened the wrong envelope. Although, he managed to correct himself before anybody came to the stage.
