Rachel Carson, Joni Mitchell, Margaret Atwood

No names – describe your worst teaching experience.

Once, a long time ago, when I asked a sophomore to lift his head up off his desk, he stood up, picked up his desk, dropped it, walked in circles yelled “FU” at me several times, and stormed out of the room. Two years later he delivered pizza to my house.

What’s the hardest thing about teaching?

The most tedious is the grading, although I often have student papers that make me happy because I can see the student’s thinking. Still, I give myself too much homework.

What’s your teacher bliss?

I love seeing a student feel successful. When the lightbulb goes off for a student, I get really excited.

Your Advice to Students:

Never be embarrassed by needing help. If you could do everything well, there’d be no need for school.
