Question: You know how everyone says that you are the main character of your own story? Well, what if there is actually only one main character and we are all background characters?
When we think of a “main character,” what probably comes to mind is a grand hero with extraordinary abilities, on a quest to save the world. Or, if we think of the real world, someone who lives a daring and interesting lifestyle, never once finding themselves in a dull moment. Perhaps they are on an exciting quest, and we are merely bystanders while they accomplish it. However, I don’t think about life this way, where there is only one person with meaning to their pursuits. I like to think that everyone is on their own personal quest, and it is up to us to discover our own purposes. The people that we might think of as “main characters” didn’t become the way they are by being passive and waiting for something magical to happen to them—they went after their goals.
If we put ourselves in a box and convince ourselves that our lives are too uneventful and boring to be “main characters,” then we will be miserable. It’s impossible to live life without experiencing boredom and monotony, so instead of looking at those moments with disapproval, we should accept that they are part of life’s process, and we should never use them to justify feeling sorry for ourselves. Instead of wishing for good things to come, we should be the ones actively pulling those things toward us. If you want to live a purposeful and interesting life, it’s up to you to make that possible. After all, if you are the main character of your own story, why not give that story meaning?
