Saying goodbye to the senior class gets harder each year, especially to those who have been with you throughout your entire highschool journey. It is hard to imagine that these people who have long-since been your first resource for a ride to practice, help with homework, or simply a solid conversation, will suddenly leave in May. The following is my fool-proof, 5 step plan for saying goodbye to your favorite seniors:
- Spend time with them- Trust me, before you know it, they’ll be off into the world on their own path. Take any chance you can to grab lunch or carpool with them. Senior year is a big deal, so it’s important, as underclassmen, to send them off with some fond memories. Make the most of your time together by simply being present; leaving behind cherished memories.
- Don’t only celebrate with them, celebrate them– We often find ourselves joining in on their excitement for college or career decisions, but it’s important that we also take the time to celebrate the person themselves; not just what their future holds. Be selfish on behalf of your senior friends and reflect on what they’ve done, as well as the impacts they’ve had on all those around them.
- Carry on their legacies- This step is more long-term, but definitely stands as a topic of great importance. Be sure that the legacies of your favorite seniors never go unappreciated! Take leadership roles in clubs they’ve started and embody qualities that they’ve valued, to truly show their impact on your life. Whether it’s upholding their leadership, kindness, or passion for certain topics, you can carry on their legacy as they move onto new chapters in their lives.
- Let them go- Seriously, let them go! They’ve been ready to get out of highschool since winter break, so you don’t want to be the one holding them back. Be sure to stay in touch as they head off on their own path, but don’t anchor them down.
- Say your farewells- Let them embark on their own adventures, and thank them for being a part of yours! To all the seniors, sincerely, thank you! Best of luck wherever your journey takes you.
