I am Nova Genest, a senior member of the Feminist Club and Civil Rights Team. Over the past few years, we’ve done a lot of great things for KHS. We’ve provided access to period products in all the KHS bathrooms, changed the dress code to be more fair and inclusive to everyone, assembled warming kits to provide families with necessities, and most importantly, we have had the honor of creating a safe space where we can learn about feminism and human rights.
However, this year, we’ve noticed there are fewer people coming to these clubs. This is a shame, because we believe that both of these clubs have much to offer. So, we’d like to tell you what we’re all about and invite you to join us!
What’s Feminist Club?
The Feminist Club is here to inform others about gender equity and justice.
What’s Civil Rights Team?
The Civil Rights Team’s mission is to educate others about Maine Civil Rights law as it applies to race and skin color, national origin and ancestry, sexual orientation, gender (including gender identity and expression), disability, and religion.
Why are we joining together?
This year, we are collaborating with the Civil Rights Team to share ideas and start projects. We believe that with our powers combined, we can accomplish so much more!
Why join these clubs?
In the words of former and current members…
“[It’s helped me] gain valuable insights.” – Molly Lachance
“…[these clubs] allow us to talk to one another about complex issues in an open environment and [were] really important to hear…” – Matthew Ewy
“Joining will make you a better person than you were before and I believe that wholeheartedly.” – Amede Olise
“If we’re supposed to be the future, we’ve got to start taking that responsibility a lot more seriously. How can we be good leaders within our community if we don’t have the knowledge and resources to do so? If we can’t ask the hard questions? If we can’t understand how people’s identities severely impact their quality of life?” -Adora Olise
“Being in Feminist Club, I learned a lot about current issues in our country and really sparked an interest in learning more about those issues. Others should join to build equality.” – Hannah Viden
“I joined Civil Rights Team because I believe in fighting for basic human rights and spreading awareness about disparities in society. It’s important + fun.” – Bennett Ewy
How can I join these clubs?
If this sparks your interest and you’d like to participate in this movement, please join us in Ms. DePue’s room (B218) on Tuesdays after school (2:15-3).
