The Housemaid by Freida McFadden
★★★★☆
The Housemaid is a mystery/thriller that primarily follows Millie, a recently hired housemaid for a wealthy family. Millie has a criminal record, which makes finding a job no easy task, so when Nina Winchester hires her to take care of her large house and look after her daughter, it seems too good to be true. During the interview, Nina seemed like a very pleasant woman, but as she starts working for her, Millie learns about the dark side of Nina’s past and witnesses first-hand how mentally unstable she is. Throughout it all, she develops a friendship with Andrew, Nina’s wealthy husband, and though Nina gets angry whenever she sees them together, Millie finds comfort in his company. What she doesn’t know, however, is that there is an even larger secret within the Winchester family than she ever could have thought possible.
I thought that this was a very entertaining read, and there was hardly ever a dull moment. McFadden has you guessing at every page, trying to piece together the strange dynamics of the Winchesters. I will say that the plot twist of the book comes in the middle, so if you’re someone who prefers a big reveal at the end, this might not be for you. I personally really liked the setup of the book, where part one was solely from Millie’s point of view and ended at the plot twist, and part two switches to another character’s point of view to give context to explain the twist. Millie was a really fun character to follow, as she was really down to earth; it was easy to connect with her. 4.5 stars overall!
