Background:
On September 22nd of this year, Doja Cat released her fourth studio album Scarlet. This album sees the 28 year old putting the pop-based sounds of her previous album aside and bringing the sounds of hip-hop and R&B to the foreground. Scarlet has a run-time of 57 minutes and 2 seconds, and has 17 songs.
Garrett’s Thoughts:
In the weeks leading into Scarlet’s release, words like “challenging,” “weird,” and “obscene” were often thrown around. However, the only thing challenging about this album is listening to the lyrics. The writing on this album is admittedly fairly grating and uninspired. However, it almost makes up for it in production quality. The beats are like ear-candy, really bumping up the score of this record for me. Despite it not being something I’d put on in my free time, I wouldn’t take offense if I heard it playing on the radio or in a mall.
Brian’s Thoughts:
Scarlet generally surprised me. I was expecting the songs to be bad, but some of the songs were pretty good. My two favorite songs from this album were Love Life and Attention. The flow was amazing on both and the lyrics were creative. Additionally, The storytelling was well done. The challenging part about listening to this album was the lyrics because some of them were confusing or flat out weird. My least favorite songs from this album were Gun and 97. Both songs felt rushed, poorly written, and generally just terrible.
Overall I think the album was good but some of the songs were subpar.
Best songs: Agorda Hills, Attention
Worst songs: Gun, 97
Final Score: 7/10
