Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi is the first book in an eleven-book series of young adult dystopian romance books. This book is very character-based with well-written, flawed, and lovable characters. The story follows Juliette Ferrars, who hasn’t touched anyone in 264 days. The last time she did, the Reestablishment locked her up in an asylum for murder. She’s been in and out of courts and detention centers for deaths she didn’t even know she could cause, since she didn’t realize her touch was lethal until it was too late. Her world shifts one day when she is granted a cellmate who is the kindest boy she has ever known, but he does not seem to remember her.
As the series progresses, she finds others like her who have been driven into hiding by the totalitarian government. These people appear to be the only hope the world has to save humanity from being wiped out. They want to save their abused environment and decaying world, but need to fight the Reestablishment to do it.
Overall, I enjoyed the series immensely. Readers can also see the author’s writing improve over the years it took her to write the series. My favorite book has to be Ignite Me, the third book in the series.
