Welcome to the first edition of “Person of the Paper,” where we will cover one influential figure per issue. These people may be making waves in pop culture, politics, or even our own community.
Recently, climate activist Greta Thunberg has been stepping into the spotlight once again. She was 15 when she began protesting, criticising systems of government, and telling the world how pressing and real climate change is. Now that she is in her 20s, she continues to draw attention for her steadfast activism and humble presence. Now, she’s not only talking about the environment, but about the treatment of Palestinian prisoners in Israel.
Thunberg participated in a flotilla, a formation of small ships, in support of Palestine, sailing towards Israel to deliver aid to prisoners despite Israel’s stubborn blockade. The flotilla was intercepted by Israel. Thunberg and the passengers from over 50 boats were detained, violently treated, and denied fresh water. The Israeli government then deported 170 activists, including Thunberg, from Israel to Athens, Greece.
The ways that Thunberg was treated in Israel were inexcusable and served as another reminder that when someone becomes an important figure, they also put themselves at the mercy of people who choose to exploit their influence. Thunberg continues to protest against many issues at the moment and is modest about her impact, saying, “Keep your eyes on Gaza, not me.”
Greta Thunberg continues to be a determined and mighty source of inspiration, especially for young people, to get out there and try to make a difference. As she continues her work, we hope her impact spreads further, especially to those who need a voice the most.
